Earth as in clay, gravel, silt, soil, and mud is abundant in fertile Punjab, and hence traditionally it happens to be the most widely used building material to create stable, warm, low-impact structures since the days of 4000 years old Harappan Civilization. To keep this alarmingly fading tradition alive, Punjabiyat has been entirely built using locally made mud bricks and mud. True to Itmenaan's core philosophy, local construction methods have been developed and improved upon in ways tailored to local craftsmen's abilities, thus supporting the indigenous construction culture of the Punjab.

Some of the salient features of Punjabiyat include:

  • The mud used for plaster has been scooped out from the very site that it stands on.
  • Local villagers were called in and their expertise was put to use.
  • The roofs have been built in traditional Punjabi style by first laying massive wooden beams called Shehtir, interspersed with smaller wooden frames, and then a layer of mud bricks was placed over the wooden frame.
  • The brick top was insulated with a thick layer of mud to protect against the extreme weather conditions to which this part of the Punjab is prone to.
  • The cottage design, niches and other decorative forms have been selected after keenly studying the local styles.

The 4 stand-alone cottages are tastefully styled in traditional Punjabi architecture and beautifully set to maximize the spectacular views across huge expanses of farmland. Simple yet stylish, these spacious, high-ceiling cottages offer you the wholesome and authentic experience of staying at a farm.

  • About 20 minute cycle ride from Punjabiyat is a Dairy Farm where you may learn about this rural dairy farming and even participate in Milking the cows
  • The famous Sikh temple, Ghallughara Saheb, is located about 20 minutes walk from here. The religious ceremonies held at the temple early in the mornings and on weekends are a must experience.
  • Final touches are being given to a Sikh History Museum close to Punjabiyat. The museum is one of the three being built by the Punjab government to encourage youngsters to take pride in their culture and history.
