Le Green House boats, Alleppey ( kerala )

About Alleppey Backwaters

The Alleppey backwaters in Kerala are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian sea coast of Kerala. The backwater network of Kerala includes large lakes linked by canals, both manmade and natural, fed by rivers, and extending virtually extending to large length. The backwaters in Kerala were formed by the action of waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the western Ghats range.

The Kerala Backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by larger stretch of waterways and in the midst of this landscape there are a number of towns and cities. The backwaters of Kerala have a unique ecosystem - freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the Arabian Sea. In certain areas, such as the Vembanad Kayal, where a barrage has been built near Kumarakom, salt water from the sea is prevented from entering the deep inside, keeping the fresh water intact. Such fresh water is extensively used for irrigation purposes.

Le Green House Boats

Le Green Kettuvalloms or Houseboats (Rice boats) are country boats that were used in the early days for the transport of goods from the isolated interior villages to the towns. With the advent of roads, bridges and ferry services, the Kettuvalloms went off the scene. Now these kettuvalloms are back again as luxurious House boats and a ride on them is a fabulous way to explore the fascinating beauty of the Kerala backwaters.

A Le Green house boat is about 67 feet in length and has a width of around 13 feet in the middle. The materials that go into the making of a Le Green House boat are all local and eco friendly bamboo poles, coconut fiber ropes, bamboo mats, coir carpets etc. Solar panels for electricity and bio-toilets are fitted to ensure that the delicate eco system of the backwaters is left undisturbed.

A Le Green houseboat is well appointed with an open lounge, one or more bath attached bedrooms and a kitchenette. Kerala house-boat is generally manned by a crew, consisting of a chef, guide and an oarsman. In addition there is also separate rest room for the crew. Traditional lanterns are used as lights. The cuisine is traditional Kerala flavor with the local specialties; delicious fish and prawns. Altogether, houseboats in kerala are great options for short breaks and getaways.
